It’s not shocking that M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of the Hitchcockian suspense thriller Trap isn’t exactly as simple as the promotional materials lead one to believe. The main plot point, in which a serial murderer inadvertently divulges the fact that a pop concert is a sophisticated ruse to apprehend him, appears to give away the signature “twist” right immediately. But rather than being a surprise, that’s a crucial element in Shyamalan’s deliberate building of a gripping contest of cunning. The straightforward idea only serves to set the stage for an engrossing and incredibly enjoyable thriller in which the surprises never stop.
